About Kielder Water Ski Club

Nothing happens in any club without a number of enthusiastic volunteers, and our club, though quite small at present, is no different.

Skiing on Kielder – The lake was full before 1983, when water sports were introduced. In 1993, skiers obtained their own clubhouse, right next to the ski area, in Leaplish Waterside Park. Now the action can be seen from the clubhouse, for those having a rest.

The ski bay is approx 120 acres (which is quite large), and it is sheltered from the prevailing winds. Speed limit in the Ski areas is 36 mph but on most of the lake it is 7mph. When east winds blow, another piece of water for skiing is available on the north shore which gives shelter for members to continue their sport. The water is available all year round, from 9am till dusk, seven days a week.

Skiing and Wakeboard Facilities - The club maintains a six buoy slalom course.

Jetty & Boat Park - A large jetty is also located right outside the clubhouse, which accommodates up to eight ski boats. It is rare to see that many boats at once, even on a Sunday. Boats can be stored on site in an open fenced area with a locked gate, and are launched down either of two close-by slipways. The club has a tractor for those competent to drive it.

Who Uses It? - The Club is mainly for Boat Owners (Families and Individuals) and those who help operate them, as currently, there is no ‘Club Boat’. However, many of the boats in the Club are jointly owned to cut capital costs. There is a large spread of people from individuals to families to cooperating groups who hope for good weather every weekend.

Improvement - Those wishing to improve their skills have access to an instructor. Over the years, we have seen many youngsters take up the sport with enthusiasm, with our youngest entering a slalom comp, aged eight.

Clubhouse Facilities – Our log cabin has good changing facilities, showers and toilets (Male, Female & differently abled). There is an open plan Galley, café area and relaxing seated area which can become a play pen for younger members!!

The space surrounding the building is a work area on one side, with picnic/barbeque opposite. Yes, the sun can shine on our ‘Costa del Kielder’.

Kielder Waterside is being developed very carefully and tastefully. As well as the location of the Ski club, it has a Caravan site, Holiday Log Cabins, Restaurant and Bar, Swimming Pool (indoor), Camp Site, Crazy Golf, Bird of prey centre, Fishing, Bike Hire, Ferry Trips and many more features. The site is managed by Northumbrian Water Ltd.
